This Valentine mobile is another example of making arts and crafts happen with what we have on hand. We didn't have enough red and pink beads for our mobile so we dyed some pasta to make our own beads. If you have never done this before, it's really simple. Put the pasta in a zip lock bag with a few drops of food coloring and shake it up until you have your desired color. Next, spread them out on a baking sheet and pop them in the oven at 300 degrees for about 10 minutes. Now you have custom craft beads! This particular shape of pasta is called Ditalini. The box cost $1.99 and we have been making projects with this one box for at least 8 months now.
Once our beads were ready, I made some hearts out of pipe cleaners and tied on a piece of plastic lacing to string the beads. I find the plastic lacing works well for kids this age because the stiffness makes it easy to thread to beads but I think shoelaces would work well too. After she made a few, I tied them to a "special branch" we had collected earlier the day and our Valentine Mobile was complete. Happy Valentine's Day!
