Marigolds - The Perfect First Plant
I still remember the first seed I ever planted. I was in Kindergarten, my flower pot was a recycled milk carton, the plant was a marigold and I was very, very proud when that first orange blossom appeared.
Marigolds are really the perfect first plant for a little gardener; they sprout in about 7 days, the plants are sturdy enough to survive the "love" of a toddler, they have bright flowers, the seeds are easy to collect and they do well in containers.
Nadia recently earned a Paint a Pot kit from My Brooklyn Baby for doing some "work" at the store. She carefully painted her pot, planted her seeds (about 5 days ago) and this morning we discovered that they had sprouted! Her gasp of delight when she saw her sprouts made my heart melt - it was as if something truly magical had happened right before her eyes.
Living in Brooklyn I think it's so important to find ways for our children to connect to nature. Planting a marigold is something you can easily do at home and your child may just remember it for the rest of her life.
